Veteran thespian Connie Chiume is brimming with pride as her mission is to keep on making a difference within the entertainment space and focus more on this after Gomora comes to an end.
Mam’Connie who plays the role of Mam’Sonto on Gomora shared with Ledikwa Media that her character has taught her and made her aware that out there they are a lot of criminals who get away with a lot.
“This character has taught me a lot about criminals who get away with crime but all I can say is crime doesn’t pay, but no I have enjoyed my stay with Gomora I’ve made friends and I have worked with amazingly talented new actors,” she said.
Mam’connie also mentioned that she always learns something from all her characters starting from the days of Zone 14.
The 70-year-old actress also mentioned that a lot of people don’t know that besides being on screen she is also a mother of the nation, Connie owns two foundations one she established back in the year 2005, she also stated that she has been grooming young people about ins and out of the industry how they should carry themselves.
“A lot of people don’t know that I have two foundations one of them opened in 2005, to help out in the communities my mission was or rather say is to fight poverty to make sure that our people get all the advantages of this world.
“For the past few years, I have been taking groups of young people overseas, and I have also worked with a lot of events in America and other international countries, so its safe to say that I have been busy trying to make a difference and giving young people an opportunity to shine, and become who they want to be,” she concluded.
Mam’Connie began her acting career with roles in Porgy and Bess, Ipi Ntombi, and Little Shop of Horrors. Upon returning to South Africa, she was cast as Thembi in the 1989 series Inkom' Edla Yodwa and then the 1990 film Warriors from Hell. In 2000, she won the award for Best Actress in a Drama Series at the South African Film and Television Awards.
In 2006, she starred in the stage productions You Strike The Woman and You Strike The Rock. From 2007 to 2015, Chiume gained prominence through her role as Stella Moloi in the SABC1 drama series Zone 14, which earned her another SAFTA. She also received the Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama during the 3rd SAFTA. In 2015, she appeared in the soap opera Rhythm City as Mamokete Khuse.
In 2018, Chiume played the Mining Tribe Elder in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Black Panther. In 2020, Chiume landed the role of Mam'Sonto Molefe in the drama series Gomora and appeared in the film Black Is King. In October 2020, she received a Feather Award nomination.
