Pictures: Alexandra township is now owned by ruthless Rats.

Alexandra Township the home of legends and a lot of… RATS!!!

They roam around the township like they own it day by day leaving nothing behind.

They catch the dogs; they eat the cats.

“The problem with the rats is massive because they are eating our children” says

Nobuhle Nqobo a mother from Alexandra.

“the rats bit her at night, they came through the holes in the door and some even walked on the roof. I heard her crying then I knew that she was being eaten by them, this happened three times.” She says.

Different people have different theories as to where they really come from, these rats are really terrorizing the streets of Alexandra township and many people wonder if they were born there or if they were brought there by somebody else.

They are rat children and grandchildren. So, it’s just a mess in Alexandra.

“I’ve lived in Alex for 28 years and I think something brought them here.” Says Grace Ndlovu, a street committee from Alex. “we once heard rumours about people who hijacked a truck and that truck was apparently carrying rats and when they got here and discovered the truck was carrying rats not goods, they abandoned it. Maybe that’s when the rats fled the truck and populated this area, but I’m not sure if they were brought in or if they arrived on their own. We never had so many rats, there was a small population, but now it’s worse, there’s too many of them, they’re everywhere.” She added

But if we work together as a community, we can surely bring an end to this plague.

“when we went deeper into the research, we discovered that rats spread disease. If we leave the problem now, it may become bigger and then we might be affected like the people in history who suffered from the bubonic plague, the rodents spread a host of other diseases.” Says Warren Radebe

The passion came from feeling that it was our turn to make a difference in our community. From that, we learned how we could change this situation regarding the rat problem.

CLEAN UP!! AND LETS CREATE A BRAND NEW ALEXANDRA.
